Variable High-Voltage Power Supply Schematics with CCFL module

Another possibility for a cheaper high voltage supply is to use CCFL modules, usually used at a fixed voltage for Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps.

The voltage on R4 thru the voltage divider R3/R4 at the max. output voltage at R7/C4, must be lower than the voltage provided by the zener diode D5. Make sure you use an opamp IC1 that can run without negative supply voltage, like LM358 or LM324 or use a comparator. Otherwise you can't get below a certain voltage, e.g. 300V, since the output of the opamp gets stuck way above zero.
